A 47-year-old woman was injured after a 20-meter-tall tree fell at a private housing estate in Hung Hom, Kowloon on Thursday. At 3pm, the tree crashed to the ground opposite the Hunghom Bay Centre, news website HK01.com reported.
When pedestrians realized the tree was about to fall, they tried to run to safety. However one victim was struck on the head and trapped under the fallen tree.
Passers-by rushed to her assistance but were unable to move the tree. Firefighters arrived and cut branches to free the woman, who was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical treatment.
The tree was planted within the grounds of private housing. Photographs showed that the exposed tree roots were short.
Tree expert Jim Chi-yung, professor of geography and environmental science of the Education University, said the fallen tree showed decay, Apple Daily reported. The tree was infected with fungus which weakened it, while its growth was hindered as it was planted in a concrete pathway.
In August of last year, a 48-year-old Indonesian domestic worker was killed by a falling tree branch in Kowloon’s Shun Lee Estate.
