Beijing is prepared to take military action to prevent any attempt to separate Taiwan from the mainland, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe has said.
According to Reuters and other news agencies, Wei also said on Thursday: “The Taiwan issue is related to China’s sovereignty and touches upon China’s core interests … on this issue, it is extremely dangerous to challenge China’s bottom line.”
That line would be if Taiwan, now known officially as the Republic of China, declared itself as the Republic of Taiwan.
Beijing’s relations with Taipei have been particularly strained since the island’s president, Tsai Ing-wen of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, came to power in 2016.
Wei’s warning came three days after the United States sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait, the latest of gestures made by Washington in support of Taiwan, a democracy with an elected legislature and government.
Wei also touched on the situation in the South China Sea, where China’s claims are disputed by several neighboring countries. Wei said China opposes displays of strength and “provocations” from countries outside the region under the “pretense” of protecting freedom of flight and navigation.
The US routinely sends warships and military aircraft to the South China Sea to protect what it calls freedom of navigation in international waters.
If China were to try to take over Taiwan, it is likely, according to some sinologists, to be in 2021, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party of China.

North Korea is smarter now. They back down to survive. Kim Jon Un will live another day.

China couldn’t even seize a tiny Kinmen island long time ago. The island is right next to China. Today Taiwan has a much larger military with advaned weapons.
China will lose both of its aircraft carriers should they attack Taiwan. China doesn’t have a war experience for so many years and attacking a country saparated by Taiwan strait is a daunting task. Chinese will definitely lose. They will be drowned by the Taiwanese.

Taiwan has its own government for many years. They have a freely elected government. China doesn’t have a government that truely represents its people. Taiwan deserves an independence and China should not attack Taiwan. Chinese should not attack another Chinese. Let Taiwan has its own independence. After all they are neighbors and businesses should run as usual. Once Taiwan is attacked, China’s communist party is doomed. The US government(president Trump) is willing to attack at China from all fronts. That would be a fatal blow to China. The wind/wave condition at the Taiwan strait is very bad for 10 months. Rough. That will be too challenging for Chinese Navy. Attacking Taiwan will only push Taiwanese away from China for so many decades.

Yashad Rizvi first of all, the U.S. has stopped enforcing their red lines (see Obama threatening Assad in Syria if he used chemical weapons…then he did and the U.S. did nothing). Second, Trump has explicitly stated that he only intends to use Taiwan as a bargaining chip with China. Third, U.S. politicians who advocate for Taiwan only do so because they are paid an average wage of $20,000 USD a month. And finally, no U.S. president has ever declared Taiwan to be a "red line" anyways.

Stephen Wieprecht the problem with that line of thinking is that the U.S. wouldn’t be able to stand it if it couldn’t invade other countries or if more countries were potential threats to it. The whole North Korea issue derives from the U.S. having an invasion army on their border and North Korea threatening to nuke the U.S. if they are provoked. Also, if the U.S. gives countries nukes, then they’d have to negotiate them away before they invaded them (i.e. Libya). So they’ll never do this because they are control freaks.

Uh, this isn’t news. Also, there needs to be a constitutional amendment made before they even can declare independence as their constitution does not allow them to alter the land they claim (and they claim all of China).

And Pakistain is part of India. As my good friend Ashob says
pak is failed state. Imran Khan is trying hard to pull this pathetic nation up from the garbage dump. It hurts us
all to see this country in this situation. Hopefully if he stays in power long enough he could just make a
difference. Iran/ china/ russia need to work with Pakistan to help it overcome this difficult phase. Its a lot to
ask but hopefully Pakistan will pull through this time around.

Ajmal Hussain The US, Aus, Jap. Not because they want to, but because Taiwan is a red line.

Mathew T Khongsai Well I certainly do get it, but I suppose it depends on the weapon size.
