On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump took to his personal Twitter account to release what he referred to as a “STATEMENT FROM THE WHITE HOUSE,” pointing the finger at China for undermining negotiations with North Korea.
“President Donald J. Trump feels strongly that North Korea is under tremendous pressure from China because of our major trade disputes with the Chinese Government,” the tweet read.
“This is not helpful!” Trump added, alleging that China was providing “considerable aid” to North Korea.
Despite the suggestion that the tweet was an official White House statement, no announcement was posted to the White House website, where such announcements are typically published.
China’s Foreign Ministry was quick to ridicule the tirade.
“A lot of people probably have the same feeling I have,” ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a briefing on Thursday, describing the tweet as “misrepresentative, irresponsible, nonsensical logic.”
“There really isn’t a normal person who is capable of understanding it,” she added.
In contrast to the United States, she said, China’s foreign policy, including its stance on the issues facing the Korean Peninsula, is very “stable and consistent.”
“We hope the US can attach importance to following through on commitments.”
