A Filipina domestic helper has stated in court that she was shocked when her employer pulled a diamond ring from the pocket of her backpack on April 24.
Jeambreth Algura made the statement during her trial in Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court on July 10 for allegedly stealing two diamond rings owned by the female employer she had served for the past seven years, the sunwebhk.com reported.
The defendant told the court that her employer Lau Yi-ki sent her on an errand that day. When she came back to find two police officers in the apartment, she noticed that her umbrella, which she usually put in the pocket of her backpack, was in the wrong place.
The defendant said the officers informed her that she was being investigated over the loss of her employer’s two rings.
The defendant said Lau opened her luggage and spilled her personal belongings onto the living room floor.
Then, the employer opened her backpack and did the same, in doing so discovering one of the two missing rings and allegedly spotting the other.
When the police officers asked Algura her how the rings got into her backpack, she said she was shocked to be suspected of stealing.
Upon cross-examination by the prosecution lawyer, the defendant mentioned she was told once by Lau’s elder son, who lived in a separate unit, that his mother wanted to take revenge on her because his younger brother was closer to the maid than their mother.
The younger son, who is now 16 years old, gave evidence to the court saying the defendant is a helpful and honest domestic worker, adding that he was very close to her as the maid had been taking care of him since he was eight years old.
Algura was remanded in custody after the hearing. She has been in detention since Apr 24, when bail was refused.

Maid is just a maid no matter what, but when the maid is so helpful and doing thier work seriously that should not give you the reason to hate her, by getting closes to the member of your family is just her way of making her life bearable after all, WHO WANTS TO BE A MAID BY CHOICE, ? NOBODY, right … so if your son hate you or not close to you, maybe SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU, DO SOMETHING ! love your family don’t just defend on the maid, no matter what, she is just a employee, that has a family too to take care of, back home and maybe her reason to work as a Maid …
Mike Foo ,I have worked there in hk as a maid for 6 years, in 2 employers for 3yrs each..then I came to macau..I’m now 12 yrs here serving the same employer who hired me since my arrival here up to now..
my boss has only a son,who was only 2yrs old when I came,now the boy is 14..it’s really ovious that the boy is close to me that to any one of his relative,including his mom of course.. even got to the point that the boy dont allow me to have my off on Sundays. so his mom decided to in cash my holidays..until now,the boy is 14,(2nd yr highschool) he still ask me to accompany him to school every morning. he won’t even sleep until I’m not inside the room..(we share a room )..
my point here is….based on my experience, there is really a big difference between hongkong chinese people and macau chinese people..especially when it comes to ATTITUDE ..despite the truth that both are in the same level of lifestyle.
the employer should be thankful to her maid for taking care of her children instead..if she was jealous of her son"s closeness to the maid, then there might be something wrong with her mind..she (employer ) should also undergo some psychological assistance…

Some mothers here they just saw their son or daughter at night and the helper is 24/7 with those kids .. be thankful because the kids is close to the helper she can rest assured that his son were safe… But what???? Frame up?? I hope they can find justice for this poor helper.. it cost so much trouble….
