A Filipino domestic worker in Saudi Arabia is seeking help from the Philippine government after she allegedly was not paid for one year.
Mary Jane Abogadie, who went to Riyadh in 2014, told her aunt Lilian Escalora that her employer also was not allowing her to return to the Philippines, ABS-CBN News reported.
Escalora told radio program DZMM Lingkod Pamilya on Wednesday that her niece’s contract ended in 2016 but she was forced to stay on by her employers. She said Abogadie serves 23 people on her own in the household and has not received her salary for one year.
Escalora said her niece was not fed proper meals and was locked in the house by her employers. Her passport was also allegedly confiscated.
Abogadie has already asked for assistance from the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh but is still in her employer’s home. The employer apparently said she can leave once the two newly-hired domestic workers who will replace her have arrived.
Josephine Tobia, welfare officer at the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), promised to help Abogadie and ensure she is repatriated as soon as possible.
Tobia said OWWA will get in touch with Abogadie’s recruitment agency to find out why she had continued working for her employer despite her contract having ended in 2016.
Rauff Halday, I agree to this. People tend to comment and make judgement about Islam. As if they know anything about it more than what they see or heard in media. They dont even have evidence of what their claiming that non muslims are dogs for the eyes of muslims. Learn that culture is far away from Religion. Islam is very deep religion that you cannot easily comprehend without pouring commitment in understanding its knowledge. And one of its pillars is Charity. If employer is a true Muslim. He would have even help to any needs of anyone on his household more than just paying the salary. And above all, Allah the One God, The only Creator is Just and Fair, if we Muslims dont give fair treatment to anyone then its against our faith and fear of God. And if we caused harm for others the punishment of God will come to us. Dont put culture and self built attitude together with religion.

I am an ofw here in riyadh 34 years…i am a Christian.and my emplyer treated me as human…their family always help me a lot..during our wake. when my Father pass awaylast month when i was in vacation…upon knowing what happen to my parents the send me ten thousands saudi riyals SR. 10, 000 as a help for our financial needs…

Rauff Halday you are the same with my employer I’m a Filipina by the way I was also working here in Saudi Arabia as a khadama my boss Baba Abdullah and Thier family they are very good to me especially their mom my salary was on time to give. They provide me what I want like toothpaste shampoo bath soup even my personal needs their mom buy me from that I am lucky that I was on good hands to these people Not all Arab are bad.

Rauff Halday sir, mashallah i hope i could find an employer like you, ive been working here in riyadh for almost 3 yrs as a family driver but still im seeking and asking my co-drivers and i think its 2 out 10 have placed in a good job who’s employer followed their contract accordingly.
