The Philippines government has come under more pressure to stop sending domestic workers abroad, with a prominent columnist arguing they should be retrained to fill gaps in professional skills at home.
Leandro DD Coronel said in a commentary carried by the Manila Bulletin that most Filipinos employed as domestic workers overseas were university graduates before they left the country.
“How many Filipino teachers, nurses, and other skilled workers are forced to downgrade their skills and degrade their persons by working as service people, a deodorized term for maids and servants?” he asked.
Acknowledging that most Filipinos seek employment abroad because of a lack of job opportunities and low salaries in the Philippines, Coronel called on the government to expand job training through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority so that skill levels were on a par with or even superior to those available elsewhere.
“So no more dreams of deploying ‘super maids’ to other countries. We either create more jobs here or help working-age Filipinos to acquire skills that are in demand abroad,” he said.
The columnist urged President Rodrigo Duterte and his government to focus on improving people’s livelihoods instead of being preoccupied with an ‘unwinnable’ war on drugs that was falsely seen as his country’s priority problem.
“It isn’t, it’s poverty. Poverty, as every OFW [overseas foreign worker] knows, is what drives them to seek employment abroad even though the work conditions there are abominable. People are poor because there aren’t enough jobs for everybody,” he said.

To remind u kahit industrialized countries meron pa rin unemployed and poverty.
Even in middle east they have all the resources pero marami pang unemployed.
Never sisihin ang government kasi nasa tao yan.kung gusto maghanapcng mapasukan sa dami ng construction sa build biild build malamang there are lots of jobs created.
No government will feed you daiky unless you yourself find a work.
Poverty paano yun pang walang trabqho ang maraming anak hinde iniisip ang responsibilidad kapag walang trabaho sisihin ang government.
Lahat yan nasa tao at dapat isipin mo kung ano ang maitulong sa government hinde yung isipin na kung ano makuha sa government.
Example saudi arabia nandito na lahat ng industries they created more jobs pero nasa tao din nila kasi ayaw magtrabaho.
Normal lang na kung gusto ng tao magabriad to look for an opportunitrs na wala sa bansa natin.

War on drugs if not totally eradicated can be minimize. So…if kaw law and order is attained investors will come in thus more works for Filipinos. Yan ang point ng ating mahal na pangulo. "Maglinis ka ng lupa" at ng mkapagtanim ng maayos mga lokal at foreign investors. Makipagtulungan tayo sa ating pangulo!

Someone is making money by exporting Filipinos overseas to do shit jobs their people won’t do. Find out who is getting paid and exposed them. I went to Macau for a day and all i saw was Filipinos mopping the floors and emptying the trash. Filipinos should never be viewed as second-class citizens in the eyes of other counties. But that is what is happening because of the OFW program.

Mr columnist, we cannot say drug war is less important and creating a job is more important or vise versa but both has to be done. However, in my point of view, our country is recovering now from being victimized by corrupt government for a very long time. With presence of unsafe soceity and corrupt government we cannot go forward in creating more jobs. It is also a fact that poverty is not the root cause of drugs although some people goes for it for easy money. Drugs just like prostitution. No matter how rich a country is, prostitutes still there and it will be there while it is not eliminated. No need to teach our President what to do because he is already on the track for it.
