A local woman has been arrested along with two domestic workers from Indonesia for suspected cruelty to animals and breaching conditions of their stay during a raid on an illegal dog farm in Yuen Long in the New Territories.
Police from Yuen Long raided the suspected dog farm in Fung Kat Heung in Yuen Long at 3pm on Tuesday with officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and staff from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Ta Kung Pao reported.
Some 101 dogs, including poodles, Schnauzer and Chihuahua, were found living in a very poor condition in three cargo containers, which had cages with two to three dogs in each placed on top of one another.
Officials said 33 of the dogs, including six young puppies, were seriously malnourished and dehydrated. Most of the dogs had been debarked – had their vocal chords cut to stop them barking – to avoid being discovered, according to the animal welfare group, Sing Pao reported.
Police arrested a 43-year-old local woman surnamed Wong, who was believed to be running an illegal dog farm, and two Indonesian domestic workers, aged 30, who assisted Wong at the farm.
The two domestic workers were also arrested for breaching the conditions of their stay.
The trio was detained at the Yuen Long police station.
