A 28-year-old Filipino PhD student was arrested and handcuffed as a suspected runaway migrant worker on Saturday evening in Zhushan, Nantou county, Taiwan, despite the fact that he had been struggling in an effort to show the police officers his identification documents.
The victim of the erroneous arrest, who wished to remain anonymous, is pursuing a doctorate in Earth system science under the Taiwan International Graduate Program at Academia Sinica, Taiwan Apple Daily reported.
Over the weekend he was staying in Zhushan in order to gather samples for research. On Saturday evening while going out alone for dinner, he was ambushed by three police officers who were on an operation to catch one of two fugitive migrant workers.
According to The Liberty Times, the student resisted the arrest and tried to explain in English that he wished to take out his student visa. However, the fact that he continued to struggle reinforced the officers’ mistaken presumption that he was the fugitive they were pursuing.
The Filipino student was then handcuffed, shackled, grabbed by the throat and forcibly pushed into a police car.
He was immediately released at the police station after finally being able to produce the documents and his student identification checked out.
Zhushan police said an apology was issued to the affected man, and both parties have signed a reconciliation agreement.

I think the guy should be given monetary reward for the humiliation and torment that he suffered. Why was he not allowed to show his identification in the first place.
Well said Marilou. I have many friends too and kinakausap ako in English.
Im working here in taiwan.my boss can speak fluent english wag nmn po lahatin.mga anak nila magagaling mg english nosebleed ako.
Dapat lagi nya dala ARC nya. Kc andun info abt s knya.
Freedom Society oo ung mga older generation. Pero the younger ones are different already.
Francis very true.dpt sumama siya willingly tapos s station n mgpaliwanag.ska dapat lagi nya dala ARC nya or passport nya.
Nag resist ksi sya kya cguro ganun. Kung sumama sana sya agad di cguro mangyari sa kanya un.
Hay naku kung ako sa kanya mag file ako ng kaso that I did before sa mga police na yan, we all have the rights to complain against their erroneous work as long as we are in legal status.
It happened in the southern part of Taiwan, Nantou province. It is understandable that the arresting police officers weren’t fully capable in communicating in English. If it happened in Taipei, the capital then the story will be different.
He was caught and he continued to STRUGGLE..which is d nya dapat ginawa.sumama na lang sana siya ng maayos at s station.na siya nagpaliwanag.Sa taiwan u need to carry ur Alien Resident Certificate at kahit mga citizens they carry their ID kahit saan sila pumunta.Because that one tells about u.
Personal experience ko yan for so many times, ikaw have u encounter this kind of experience or something related?
not all nmn po
Amo kong pulis d nga marungong mag english
The point is mga stupid talaga ang mga police dito sa Taiwan., Hindi sila nag isip na about the possible situation, block minded agad na TNT
Pero bihira talaga marunong mag English sa Kanila..
It hurts
To those who are making comments that even professional people in taiwan cant even speak simple English i beg to disagree.
"Both parties have signed reconciliation agreement…"playing safe…para di mkapag file ng reklamo ung studyante sa mga pulis…paano nya nga maipapakita ung student visa nya eh they grabbed by the throat.handicuffed.sackled and forcibly pushed into a police car…
Mga professional people of taiwan cant speak even simple english. Hirap mkipag communicate s knila
