Around 3,000 Indonesian domestic workers, trained to provide home nursing care for the elderly, are expected to come to Hong Kong over the next year to alleviate the shortage of carers trained to look after the city’s older citizens.
Leung Hing-ki, chairman of Hong Kong TKI Association, said his employment agency had lined up several training centers in Indonesia to provide tailor-made training on home-based elderly care, Sing Tao Daily reported.
The three-month training includes how to use wheelchairs, how to help old people get out of bed, bathing and providing assistance when they go to the washroom. Trainees would have to go to an elderly center to understand more about elderly citizens before coming to Hong Kong.
Leung expected 2,000 to 3,000 trained Indonesian workers could arrive in Hong Kong in a year’s time, and said that their salary would be raised to at least HK$6,000 (US$766) a month once they were trained.
Currently, the standard wage for domestic workers in Hong Kong is HK$4,310 a month.
Meanwhile, at least 20 nursing school graduates from the Philippines will come to Hong Kong for elderly nursing jobs, Cheung Kit-man, chairman of the Hong Kong Employment Agencies Association, said. Their starting salary could reach at least HK$5,000,
The main responsibility would be to take care of the elderly, but a reasonable amount of household chores and cooking would also have to be done, he said.
Cheung’s agency reached an agreement with the Philippine government early this year for this arrangement and the first batch of carers could arrive to Hong Kong in February next year.
The city’s elderly population is expected to double to 2.3 million by 2034, data from the Census and Statistics Department indicates.
