A drunk driver in Vietnam who crashed into multiple motorbikes, killing one and injuring five, is facing 10 years of prison time.
Nguyen Thi Nga, 46, was charged with violating road traffic regulations, VN Express reported. Prosecutors in Binh Thanh district in Ho Chi Minh City said she could face up to a decade in jail.
A restaurant owner, Nguyen was reportedly speeding on Dien Bien Phu Street and lost control of her BMW. She crashed into five motorbikes at the Hang Xanh intersection at about 11 pm on October 21 last year. The vehicle continued on and rammed into a taxi, killing a 38-year-old woman on the spot.
She was found with 0.94 milligrams per liter of alcohol content in her blood. In Vietnam, drivers are penalized if they have a presence of alcohol in the blood. She confessed that she had too much beer before the accident.
Nguyen gave the victim’s family 150 million dong (US$6,400) for the funeral services and proposed giving them a monthly allowance of 3 million dong (US$128) to help the victim’s daughter go to school. They rejected the offer and demanded compensation of 2 billion dong (US$85,499) instead.
