An employment agency was fined a total of S$78,000 (US$57,198) and got their license revoked by a Singapore state court last week for adopting inappropriate marketing of Indonesian domestic workers on an online marketplace late last year.
In September 2018, the authorities noticed some problematic advertisements by SRC Recruitment LLP, which showed personal details and faces of foreign domestic workers on Carousell, an online marketplace, the Shin Min Daily News reported, citing a statement from the Ministry of Manpower.
The company was fined S$48,000 (US$35,199) for 16 counts of breaching of the Employment Agency Licence Conditions by advertising foreign domestic workers insensitively and casting them in an undignified light. It was also fined a further S$30,000 (US$21,999) for another 29 charges related to offenses under the Employment Agencies Act.
The company pleaded guilty to the 45 charges that led to the fines, plus a further 99 charges were also taken into consideration for the purposes of sentencing.
Previously, the court heard that 49 Indonesian domestic workers had been advertised on Carousell as if they were “commodities” between September 1 and 17, 2018, the ministry’s investigation showed.
Despite alerts from officials on several occasions – in July 2014, November 2016 and February 2018 – on responsible advertising, the alleged agency failed to exercise sensitivity when marketing its services, the ministry said.
