A 45-year-old man from Singapore was jailed for three weeks after pleading guilty to four charges as a result of having intimated his Indonesian wife with a chopper, several knives and a sword.
It was learned that early on August 12, 2017, the man surnamed Lo startled his wife, with whom he had two sons, aged 5 and 7, by wielding a kitchen chopper, five knives, and a sword and placing them next to her on the bed at their home in York Hill, the Shin Min Daily News reported.
In doing so, Lo violated a Personal Protection Order that had been placed on his wife from January 16, 2017. He was further charged with one count of the Protection from Harassment Act, and criminal intimidation.
One of the knives was allegedly more than 28 centimeters long, which led him to a charge of unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act.
Six days later, he also attempted to hurt his wife using a knife and struck her, prompting the victim to flee by locking herself in a washroom.
The court learned that at the time of the offences, the man was jobless and under great financial pressure after he had sold the family home to invest in a friend’s business that turned out to be a scam.
However, this was hardly justification for his acts, the court noted.
Taking into consideration a letter requesting leniency written by the victim, the court sentenced Lo, who had a previous record of manslaughter for which he served 10 years in jail, to three weeks in prison.
