Ang bilang ng mga manggagawang Pilipino sa Kuwait ay bumaba ng higit sa siyam na buwan dahil sa mga ulat ng mga domestic worker ay inaabuso sa bansa.
Ayon sa Central Administration of Statistics ng Kuwait, ang kabuuang bilang ng mga lalaki at babae na Pilipino sa bansa ay bumaba mula 243,400 hanggang 216,200 noong 2018 – sa makatuwid, 27,000 Pilipino ang umalis sa bansa sa siyam na buwan, iniulat ng Kuwait Times.
Mga 86% ng mga Pilipino na umalis sa Kuwait ay babae, karamihan sa kanila ay mga domestic worker. Sinasabi ng mga analista na ang pagbagsak ay kaugnay ng krisis sa mga domestic worker noong nakaraang taon.
Maaga noong nakaraang taon, natagpuan ang katawan ng isang domestic worker na Filipino na inilagay sa isang freezer sa isang apartment sa Saliya nang mahigit sa isang taon. Bilang resulta, ipinagbawal ng gubyerno ng Pilipinas ang lahat ng mga Pilipino na ma-deploy sa Kuwait at tinawagan ang lahat ng mga Pilipino sa bansa na bumalik sa kanilang tahanan.
Sinabi ng Pangulo ng Pilipinas na si Rodrigo Duterte na ang permanenteng pag-deploy ng mga manggagawang Pilipino sa Kuwait ay dahil sa mahihirap na kalagayan sa trabaho sa bansa.
Mas maaga sa buwang ito, 30 Pilipino na mga domestic worker ang naibalik sa Pilipinas matapos na inamin na sila ay pisikal o sekswal na inabuso ng kanilang mga employer. Ang mga Filipina ay hindi binigyan ng kanilang buwanang suweldo, ang iniulat ng Arab Times.
Ang mga Pilipino ang bumubuo sa ikaapat na pinakamalaking nasyonalidad ng mga manggagawang expat sa Kuwait. Ang mga Indiyan ay nangunguna sa listahan na may 889,000 na nasyonal, na sinusundan ng mga taga-Ehipto na may 848,000 at Bangladeshis na may 271,000. Ang apat na nasyonalidad ay nagtatala para sa 89% ng kabuuang trabaho ng domestic o pribadong sektor sa Kuwait.
