An Indonesian man has been arrested after he allegedly physically abused an 11-year-old boy and kept him inside a chicken coop.
On March 4, Joko Sutopo and Pardiman were working on the wall of a chicken coop in the city of Pekanbaru, Riau, The Jakarta Post reported, when they found the boy, who appeared weak and battered. They rushed him to a nearby hospital.
According to local police officer M. Hanafi, the suspect—Jenfriwan Harefa, 21—was a friend of the victim’s father and was working as a caretaker of the coop. Harefa and the boy’s father reportedly worked together.
When the boy’s parents had to relocate for work, they entrusted their son with Harefa, hoping their son would be in good care and headed to Duri, Bengkalis.
A medical examination suggested that the boy was beaten with a piece of wood and with a metal spoon that was heated. It was also reported that the abuse had been ongoing since January.
As well as suffering from bruises and burns throughout his body, two of the boy’s ribs were broken and he had suffered serious injuries to his eyes. The boy is now in intensive care at the Bhayangkara Hospital.
Harefa now faces up to 15 years in jail under Article 80 of Law No, 35/2014 on child protection of the Indonesian penal code.
