목동 9명이 스키 홍보를 위해 전통 털 스노보드만을 이용해 중국 신장 위구르 자치구에서 300km를 여행했다.
관영 신화통신은 “신장 아러타이(阿勒泰) 출신 목동 9명이 위구르 자치구 산악 지대를 10일 동안 횡단했다”고 보도했다. 그들이 지나온 지역에는 100km가 넘는 무인 황야 지대도 포함되어 있었다.
리더인 말리킨은 “아러타이의 고대 스키 문화를 알리고, 사람들이 신장에서 스키를 타는 재미를 맛볼 수 있게 하는 것이 이번 여행의 목적이었다”고 말했다.
목동들은 1월 5일 신장 바이하마(Baihaba) 마을을 출발, 10일 뒤인 15일 아러타이에 도착하며 여행을 끝냈다. 이들은 12월에 짧은 시간 동안 모의 연습도 했다고 한다.
목동들이 사용한 털 스노보드는 소나무, 말가죽, 소가죽을 이용해 만든 것으로, 5,000여 년 전에 처음 사용됐다. 이처럼 과거에는 털 스노보드가 신장 지역에서 중요한 여행 수단이었으나, 몇 년 전부터는 운송이 아닌 스포츠 용도로 활용되고 있다.
신장 지역에는 수천 년 전 털 스노보드가 운송 수단으로 사용됐다는 걸 보여주는 고대 동굴 벽화들이 남아 있다.
