A 44-year-old Taiwanese man in Chiayi, Taiwan, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday after allegedly shooting his Vietnamese girlfriend, who was in a stable condition at a hospital.

At about midnight on January 10, the Shuishang Precinct of the Chiayi County Police Department received reports from residents in Chiayi of multiple gunshots, the China Times reported.

A special squad was dispatched to the scene, where the Vietnamese woman, who had been shot in the abdomen, was found and quickly referred to the Chia-Yi Christian Hospital where she was reportedly in a stable condition after resuscitation.

About two hours after the shooting, officers managed to track down the man in Beigang town of Yunlin County. A modified pistol with four bullets and a bullet cartridge were seized as evidence.

A preliminary investigation found the man had been dating the woman for three or four years. However, the pair recently had conflicts over money issues. The man admitted he had been waiting for an opportunity to shoot his girlfriend.

He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
