A 57-year-old Vietnamese man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly growing cannabis in an apartment in Kowloon. At 4 pm, acting on tip-off, police from the special duty unit of Kowloon West Police Headquarters raided an apartment in Tung Choi Street in Mong Kok and found 50 cannabis plants growing in a 600-square-feet area, the Oriental Daily reported.

A total of 4.2 kilograms of cannabis buds estimated to be worth at least HK$1.5 million (US191.183) were also confiscated. Officers arrested a 57-year-old man, said to be an illegal immigrant from Vietnam, for allegedly growing cannabis plants and illegal entry.

Officers also confiscated lights, soil and fertilizer, ventilation systems, a watering system and air-conditioners which they believed the suspect used to cultivate the plants.

The man, holding a Vietnamese passport, went to mainland China before entering Hong Kong illegally. He had been staying in the city for six months, a police spokesperson said.

Police said the cannabis farm had been in operation for two months. They believed the man rented the apartment and lived there as well, Sing Tao Daily reported. Police are investigating triad links to the farm as they believed the marijuana was to be sold at entertainment premises in the West Kowloon area.
