A 52-year-old man from Turkey walked free from the High Court on Monday after being charged with raping a woman two years ago.
Akkoyun Mustafa, a chef holding a tourist visa when he arrived in Hong Kong in 2016, was arrested for allegedly raping a woman from mainland China in a hostel in Chungking Mansions in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui, the Oriental Daily reported.
The case was stopped in the High Court when the prosecutor told the court that the victim, identified as X, said she was not able to continue the trial as she did not feel well. She said she wanted a normal life in the future.
X returned to China last Thursday. It was the second trial Akkoyun faced and the first trial ended in a similar situation in March this year.
High court judge Susana D’Almada Remedios had to acquit Akkoyun after prosecutors said they were no longer pursuing the case. The judge told Akkoyun he should be very careful about his behavior in the future.
The court earlier heard that X, aged 20 at that time, got drunk shortly after being discharged from hospital on November 15, 2016, in Hong Kong. Akkoyun sent X a WeChat message and said he would like to meet her.
The man then went to the hostel X stayed at in Chungking Mansions and allegedly raped her.
