A 59-year-old Filipino domestic worker was fined HK$1,200 (US$153) after pleading guilty at the Hong Kong Eastern Magistrates Court to one count of theft.
The woman admitted stealing one pair of blue jeans and a black jacket from the Uniqlo branch on the ground floor of Lee Theatre Plaza in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island on October 21, hongkongnews.com.hk reported.
She was arrested after a security guard saw her take the clothes and put them on her arm before covering the two items with her own jacket. She then walked out of the store without paying, but the alarm sounded and the guard ran after her.
The defendant, who has had only two employers in her 31 years working in Hong Kong, earns more than the standard monthly salary of HK$4,400 but she sends almost HK$4,000 of that back to the Philippines to support her daughter’s studies, the defense lawyer said.
The lawyer pleaded for leniency, claiming that his client stole out of greed and for her own use. “She’s very remorseful and promises not to offend again,” he added.
The magistrate said her bail of HK$700 would be deducted from her HK$1,200 fine and she would have two months to pay the remaining balance.

I can understand the frustration as HK is so expensive now and you maids still earn the same crap wages as 10 years ago, me too but of course I earn a lot more Thank God and like you guys support my family back in the Philippines too but still no excuse to risk what you have already ,especially for your family who depend on you.God may forgive but most locals won’t.

Thank you to you for having a good judgment and I agree with you no one of us has the right to judge her and let God be the judged not us. We all make mistakes and no one is righteous before the Lord. We all sinners and the Bible said na hwag tayong humusga dahil kung ano ang ihusga natin sa ating kapwa ay iyan din ang ihuhusga sa atin ng Dios. Kaya naman we have to be careful not to judge others matakot po tayong lahat sa Dios dahil balang araw isa isa po tayong haharap sa Dios .
