As the warring Republicans and Democrats turned their focus to the crucial midterm elections on Sunday, US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell described the confirmation of controversial nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court as his “proudest moment” in the upper house, AFP reported.
Kavanaugh was confirmed to the court Saturday by a razor-thin margin in the Senate, ending months of partisan fighting over his nomination and giving Donald Trump one of the biggest wins of his presidency.
“I’m proud of my colleagues. This is an important day for the United States Senate,” McConnell told “Fox News Sunday.”
Kavanaugh was sworn in shortly after the Senate voted 50-48 in his favor – a move that pushed the high court’ further to the right under the Republican president, who has chosen two of the nine sitting justices.
Commenting on the anger felt by Democrats, Senator Richard Blumenthal tweeted that the Republicans had confirmed “a dangerous & deeply flawed nominee only by breaking all the rules & norms. The damage done today will be enduring.”
Protesters gathered in Washington and other American cities against the appointment of the 53-year-old jurist, who has faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and been criticized for his bitter partisan rhetoric.
Tremble liberals for thine hour is nigh. For too long have we suffered under the PC tyranny and now we shake off it’s yoke. What new monsters have been awakened by your excesses you have only yourselves to blame.
Senator Blumenthal is overreacting, as usual!
Obama had no response to North Korea, Trump is planning a 2nd Summit!
It’s sad when positions to our highest court end up as political
decisions rather than humanitarian ones. This has become a
no win game for anyone. Life itself will continue to simply bipass
SCOTUS when necessary.
