A 46-year-old Filipino woman who was caught shoplifting in Taiwan on August 2 tried to bluff her way out of trouble by speaking only English to the staff who caught her.
The domestic worker was caught red-handed attempting to steal cosmetics from a convenience store in Pingtung County in Southern Taiwan. She pretended she did not understand the staff and spoke only in English.
A patrol from the Yanpu Police Station in Ligang Precinct of the Pingtung County Police Bureau received a report that a customer had hidden a powder foundation and an eyeliner in her handbag and tried to leave without paying, according to the Pingtung County government.
It was allegedly her second attempt to steal cosmetics from the same shop. CCTV footage caught the woman leaving the shop without paying some days earlier.
When police arrived, the woman was arguing in English with the shop assistant, who could not speak English. A female officer named Liu, a university graduate from the Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Kaohsiung City, spoke to the woman in fluent English, The United Daily News reported.
The Filipina admitted her guilt and was arrested for shoplifting.
