China has deployed its Liaoning aircraft carrier with escorting warships near Hainan Island as the US Navy’s Theodore Roosevelt strike group enters the South China Sea, according to a Hong Kong press report.
Sing Tao Daily said Thursday that the Nimitz-class carrier Roosevelt and the other warships of Carrier Strike Group 9 have ended a port visit to Singapore and are now sailing in the South China Sea.
The Roosevelt’s strike group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson, according to Singapore’s Straits Times.
The Chinese carrier group appears to be engaging in naval drills near Hainan. Hainan Province maritime officials have reportedly issued a temporary ban on travel in waters near the island, because of military maneuvers that are scheduled to take place from Thursday to Wednesday.
UPI, in picking up the story, noted the Roosevelt is sailing within the “nine-dash line” that extends more than 1,200 miles from the Chinese mainland into the South China Sea. Beijing claims the waters as its own, while the US and other nations say the area is in international waters.
The US Carl Vinson carrier strike group conducted joint exercises with Japanese naval units in the Western Pacific last month and is now headed back to its home port in San Diego.
Satellite photos show that China conducted a large-scale naval exercise near Hainan Island at the end of March. The ships included the Liaoning and 40 other warships.

Nick Nsm At very beginning I commented to the writer that China did not say the water within the nine-dash-line is its own. I just want to correct the writer’s article. I repeat again “CHINA DID NOT SAY THE WATER WITHIN THE NINE-DASH-LINE BELONGS TO CHINA.” Most of the Philippine peoples do not understand the UNCLOS. The EEZ is ‘exclusive economic zone.’ It only relates to the economical issues. It has nothing to do with the territories. I mentioned several times that UNCLOS gives a country the right for resources in the sea and in the subsoil under the sea (continental shelf). However, it does not give a country any rights to the land features above the sea levels. If rocks, reefs are above high tides, they will not be governed by UNCLOS. They will be governed by international laws. The UNCLOS did not provide the Philippine legal bases to claim Spratly Islands & Scarborough Shoal.
No mention about the historical records of Chinese activities in the South China Sea. Just based on the western country’s standards (so-called international laws), China issued a map to the world claiming that Spratly Islands & Scarborough Shoal are Chinese territories in 1935. After WWII, China issued the ‘U-shaped’ map to claim those islands, rocks, reefs and their surrounding waters again in 1947.
The South China Sea issues are mainly the overlapping claims to the EEZ. China & the Philippines should talk over the issues of overlapping EEZ.

Steve Jiau, the portion of the West Philippine Sea was recognized under UNCLOS to be part of the Philippine EEZ. This clearly means that it is not part of Chinese territory. The claim of China over almost the entire sea straddling the Philippines, Vietnam, Malayasia, Brunei, Taiwan and China is merely based on maps of dubious origin. Ships of many nations have been plying those waters since time immemorial without any objections from China except very recently. If those waters really belong to China then China should sink military vessels of other nations that pass within the 12-mile territorial limit. Unless China do so, its claim is toothless.
If they sink an American warship they must be colorblind …weak Obama is not the pacifist in the Oval Office anymore..if they do go right ahead and the only thing China would be sailing again in the DVD is a tugboat.
