China has deployed its Liaoning aircraft carrier with escorting warships near Hainan Island as the US Navy’s Theodore Roosevelt strike group enters the South China Sea, according to a Hong Kong press report.
Sing Tao Daily said Thursday that the Nimitz-class carrier Roosevelt and the other warships of Carrier Strike Group 9 have ended a port visit to Singapore and are now sailing in the South China Sea.
The Roosevelt’s strike group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson, according to Singapore’s Straits Times.
The Chinese carrier group appears to be engaging in naval drills near Hainan. Hainan Province maritime officials have reportedly issued a temporary ban on travel in waters near the island, because of military maneuvers that are scheduled to take place from Thursday to Wednesday.
UPI, in picking up the story, noted the Roosevelt is sailing within the “nine-dash line” that extends more than 1,200 miles from the Chinese mainland into the South China Sea. Beijing claims the waters as its own, while the US and other nations say the area is in international waters.
The US Carl Vinson carrier strike group conducted joint exercises with Japanese naval units in the Western Pacific last month and is now headed back to its home port in San Diego.
Satellite photos show that China conducted a large-scale naval exercise near Hainan Island at the end of March. The ships included the Liaoning and 40 other warships.

Kolya Milos if they sink them, they would’ve just signed their own suicide note
in the mind of a conqueror, no need to advertise what you will do,, just keep on pushing forward until you get what you want to get, legal squating in the high sea
Enrico Gonzales Santos UNCLOS gives a country the right for resources in the sea and in the subsoil under the sea (continental shelf). However, it does not give a country any rights to the land features above the sea levels. If rocks, reefs are above high tides, they will not be governed by UNCLOS. The Philippines does not have the legal bases to claim Spratly Islands & Scarborough Shoal. However, China & the Philippines should talk over the issues of overlapping EEZ.
Tim Delez China always says joint development and share of the resources; however, the Philippines wants to have the resources alone. It was the Philippine that wanted to arrest China’s fishermen. It was the Philippine that fired at Taiwan & Vietnam’s fishermen. It is obvious that the Philippines is the bully.
We don’t know other SEA countries, as far as Brunei and Malaysia is concerned, we’re in very close relationship with China. Having ongoing mega projects… So, whether China is good or bad, leave it to the concrete facts to judge, we don’t have to debate this.
Ahmed Waheed well said!
stevie if you claim you territory includes what is inside the 9-dash line then it is yours. unfortunately for china it can only bully small neighboring countries. now, here is a bigger bully keeping on entering theSCS. where is your vaunted toughness? sink those vessels to show your might and let us see how tough these yellows are. if you cannot do it keep silent because it will just show that china and chinese are bullies but deep down are COWARDS
Steve Jiau What Mr.jiau, would think only China has the right to own all islet at SCS.in fact it is in EEZ of the Phil.
Steve Jiau read and understand UNCLOS it seem u re the one who owes not…
Uhif Soifdj, even Tibet was sovereign nation until china usurped it.
Kolya Milos then the US will have no choice but to go to war and nuke China
all the western countries including USA cannot afford bomb China.
and by the way USA is the biggest threat in the world security. they think everything has to be the way they want
Only the VERY STUPID COMMENTERS who doesn’t understand china’s 9 dash claim of ownership over SCS.
Danilo Abe-abe You better ask the Philippines about this question. It is the Philippines that did not raise the territorial issues. They choose an arbitral tribunal paid by the Philippines to settle the disputes concerning the interpretation or application of UNCLOS. According to UNCLOS, this arbitral tribunal does not have the jurisdiction on the territorial issues. . What are the world’s responses to the SCS arbitration? The fact is, according to AMTI CSIS (a US Think Tank), there are only 7 states (United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, and Philippines) that recognize the rules. Before the ruling, there were 41 countries publicly supporting Arbitral Proceedings as Binding; however, after the ruling, only 7 states recognize the rule. Why? Because international societies know the SCS arbitration does not follow the procedures set up in UNCLOS, the tribunal expands its authority to make a ‘law’ and does not respect the earlier precedent. There is no sense for them to recognize this kind of rules.
Steve Jiau then… whom do we call for arbitration on territorial issues? chinas court? if you can’t (china) respect international decision
how do you expect china to be fair? the truth is. . . china is a bully country who chow on a weaker neighbor.
Takot lang ng china di yan papalag…
Tell that to the fishermen of my country China has bullied and harassed. What we enjoy before, we no longer can be caused your claim for sovereignty stepped on ours. Stop spreading lies. By your action, you already undermined our sovereignty and freedom of navigation.
Yes.. nine – line is their new invention.. china is known for fake….invention…..no wonder…
