A Filipino woman is to face trial in Hong Kong next month after pleading not guilty to abandoning her one-year-old son on a street in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island last year.

Angelita Labador, 37, pleaded not guilty to the charge at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court on March 19. She had been arrested in October after a neighbor told the police that she had seen the woman leave her baby on a sidewalk next to a trash bin on Queen’s Road East in Wan Chai, sunwebhk.com reported.

Police said they found the baby and sent him to a hospital for a medical examination while arresting the suspect, who was said to have been hiding nearby.

Magistrate Peter Law set the trial date for May 31 after the prosecution asked for time to prepare and to contact the witness, and also pending psychiatric reports on defendant’s mental condition.

The court was told that the defendant had been staying in a shelter run by International Social Services Hong Kong, which had also assisted her since her arrest, while her son was in the custody of the Social Welfare Department.
