A message on social media questioning the holiday arrangements for domestic workers in Hong Kong has drawn a lot of criticism.
A netizen named Suki posted a message on a Facebook group called “Support Group for HK Employers with Foreign Domestic Helpers” on Monday that questioned why foreign maids whose traditions do not oblige them to go tomb-sweeping on the Ching Ming Festival can still enjoy a one-day holiday, Oriental Daily reported.
This year’s Ching Ming Festival, when Chinese people traditionally go to clean and sweep the graves of their ancestors, falls on April 5. Ching Ming is one of the 12 statutory holidays in Hong Kong that domestic workers are entitled to enjoy.
Suki complained that she would not be able to take her young children to go tomb-sweeping and there would be no one to take care of them because her maid would have the day off.
She said that as foreign workers did not have any ancestors to worship at the festival, how could it be that they still enjoy the day off and go partying with their friends?
One netizen advised Suki to ask her domestic worker to swap the holiday for a different day. Suki said her maid at first refused to make such a swap, but after negotiation, she finally agreed to rearrange her holiday.
Many netizens slammed Suki’s message and accused her of being a mean employer. Some said she should not have Christmas holidays if she is not a Christian.
One netizen lamented that once some Hongkongers hire a domestic worker, they start behaving like landlords or capitalists who like exploiting workers.

If foreign domestic helper in hk have no right to enjoy the 1 day holiday on ching ming festival every April 5th of the year…..because they have no ancestors to visit and clean the grave,,,,.so they must also have the right to have holidays on a 3 days holyweek.because 90% of filipino domestic helpers are Christians
But they’re not included to have holidays on holyweek..a lot of people in hk are pagans but few were Christians..just saying… ????????????????????????????
What you mean helpers are not allowed to enjoy with there friends oh dear i want to say you something butttt
holy week is for Christian..do they give a,holiday to us?they are not worshipping the death of Jesus.why they took a holiday..and we Christian helpers we don’t have holiday..
If you dont know the rules and equality of being a person, you should not hire any helper, The rules is from your own Government, you must follow that. Before you go and pray for your ancestors try to learn to respect the rights of your employee. If you think you are good then try to imagined to put yourself to the position of your helper. Then think how would you feel to have an employer like you!!!
Correct
Very well said.❤️❤️????
It is clearly stated in he labor law all public holidays are eligible for all employees be it in companies or even we domestic helpers are employee.there would be no problem qith it.if you need your helper for a certain holiday then compromise it with your helper but to complain why we are having public holiday because were not chinese to observe that holiday I dont think its right,n besides we dont go partying if we can rest as much as possible we want to n if some go with friends we want to enjoy just for a day.it’s a labor law anyway.
Ayaw malamangan gusto xa lang makalamang your not supposed to have helper you dont have consideration in your helper dont you know we are human too we need rest if you cant handle that its not your helper fault try to be a helper to know what does it feel to have you as a employer
mean employer..better dont get a helper so you dont have problem
It is just a matter of a give-and-take,relationship.
We, as Catholic as well cannot join in the commemoration of the Holy week (Good Friday, esp.)because it is not included in our, statutory holidays…
As far as swapping is concerned the helper should be informed earlier to arrange, with the appointments she made beforehand for that holiday…
Respect is earned,so must respect each other for a good, or better or should I say the best employee-employer relationship ever.
God bless us all
Korek..kalahi nya
Thats wat i know ..kawawa nga maid nya
Exactly
Really some employers are like that. They used to complain without thinking that some employers actually violating some of FDHs rights about having 24hrs holiday. Some of us need to work before we go out on our holiday and need to work again after we came back from holiday. Its just sad that despite HK govt. really try to be fair between employers and helper. Some of employers overstepping to their rights just because they are thinking they are the one who are paying us.
hahahahaha hahahaha and hahahahaha blame ur government then…to impose such statutory .ay saya nya..then can we goback to phils to every 1st nov to clebrate all souls day?
We,foreign workers know our rights. We also respect the H.K. laws. So,since the gov’t. designated the Ching Ming Fest as 1 of our stat. holiday, let me tell you Ms. Suki that we are entitled for it.But whenever our employers negotiate to swap it to another day,we are amenable to it.NO NEED TO AIR YOUR GRIEVANCES ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
Now I can see bow unlucky your helper to have you
Stupid ass????
Now,without your helper to help you should make you realized that you’re half body paralized…so treasure your helper mdm…don’t be so mean.
