A Filipino domestic worker was sentenced to a year in jail at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Semira Arlene Tejada had pleaded guilty to stealing HK$200,000 (US$25,570) in cash from her employer at a flat in Phoenix Court on Broadcast Drive in Kowloon Tong on October 6 last year, Sing Tao Daily reported.
The court heard that the maid’s employer, local inventor Vani Li Wai-yan, put HK$200,000 cash in the dining room. However, he later had trouble finding the money and thought he had put the cash in another place.
Li later found that Tejada, who worked for him for a few months, had bought an air-ticket to the Philippines for HK$5,600. He suspected that the domestic worker stole his money.
Li called the police and found out later that the defendant admitted that she had stolen his cash. She had sent HK$110,000 back home in the Philippines and spent the rest of it in Hong Kong.

This is so true, when it is the employer who did something wrong or abused/maltreated their helpers it won’t be a big issue, its just like its given or acceptable in this culture that it is ok to treat their helpers as slave, not enough food and rest but mountains of work to do. But when it is the helper who did something like even minor mistakes or negligence maybe because they ate too tired to keep focused, the issue would be out in the paper even their names print out, its really an unfair society, a racist society. I am so thankful that my Western employers arw so kind and very humanely!
Stuart Mckiddie thanks for your good comment. But in the Philippines, it’s not that there are no work for us somebody needs to go abroad to support the family because the salary in our country is not enough to live with.
Speechless talaga kahit cents di dapat kunin pag hindi atin i work with a very rich employer and see a lot of money cash more than 200hundred thousand dollars but never think to touch the money i saw .
this kind of act from a fellow filipino affects us so much… you only didn’t make a shame o. yourself ate,but your whole race here in hongkong were affected by your deeds… it is just then right that you suffer from what you’ve done…I pray that this thing will serve as a lesson to those who are still doing it and to those who plan to do it.. God bless all of us…
Korek
Marilyn Vasquez dear marilyn, glad for your thoughts, this is so true,I am speaking out for migrant workers rights,I never said this lady was right to steal,I said she should face the law the same as everyone, and then I said the law is mostly onesided, its all for the employer, there is a saying
"walk a mile in my shoes" I dont know if you heard of it? but it means we dont know what its like and before we condemn someone we should think about it before we speak.
there seems to be to be little compassion for some of these women from people who should know better.Only God knows out true hearts,we do not know what people are thinking etc ,so lets see a bit more compassion, and maybe the world could be a better place,,here endest the sermon haha
take kind regards.

Tessie Pedro dear tessie, exactly how i feel about it,seems many replies are about how badly she acted, but not much support for all the acts of abuse, thanks God bless
Stuart Mckiddie was right employer and maid should have equal right and protection under the law but no it doesn’t happen that way .
