A Filipino domestic worker was sentenced to a year in jail at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Semira Arlene Tejada had pleaded guilty to stealing HK$200,000 (US$25,570) in cash from her employer at a flat in Phoenix Court on Broadcast Drive in Kowloon Tong on October 6 last year, Sing Tao Daily reported.
The court heard that the maid’s employer, local inventor Vani Li Wai-yan, put HK$200,000 cash in the dining room. However, he later had trouble finding the money and thought he had put the cash in another place.
Li later found that Tejada, who worked for him for a few months, had bought an air-ticket to the Philippines for HK$5,600. He suspected that the domestic worker stole his money.
Li called the police and found out later that the defendant admitted that she had stolen his cash. She had sent HK$110,000 back home in the Philippines and spent the rest of it in Hong Kong.

nakakalungkot isipin, nakakahiya n din damay yung matitino na katulong dito..sana nman magisip pong mabuti wag maging gahaman, pwede nmang magloan n lng…
Rot her in jail.
They don’t just realized that honesty is the best policy .
Michelle Noynay Potenciano you say its not easy to earn loyalty from an employer, where I come from loyalty is a two way street, its not the maids job to crawl to the employer its her role as a worker to do her job to the best of her ability with respect and and its the employers job to pay her/him and treat her/him with respect, they are not getting the money for free they are providing a service=eg cleaning etc, they should not abuse that respect by stealing, but the emploer should not abuse his staff either.this girl was punnished for her crime the same as anyone else. but get it into perspective ,how many employers are stolen from or abused by their migrant workers ,the number would be small compared to abuse handed to the maids, that is what worrys me not if she lost respect from her employer or dignity, there seems to be a thought that she owes people an apololgy ? she stole, went to court finished. now use your time to speak about the abuse of all the migrant workers it happens to ,this would be more worthwhile.
Maya Managud Ko I didnt say it was acceptable to steal, why she did I dont know,I said that is the law is the law she must face the consequences.you said I dont know why there are these kinds of people,I can tell you why because there are no jobs ,there is corruption, there is poverty, so people have to leave their family, and country and work for people who think they are better than them and get treated like rubbish and abused and sometimes killed, maybe you should think about that ,I cannot write any more, you are not worth talking to,its exactly your attitude to migrant workers that is why this happens,.
Michelle Noynay Potenciano yes michelle its true she wasted her chance but she is paying for it now and it is hard to earn respect etc,but the amount of workers who are abused by their employers far out weighs the amount of employers who are stolen from or verbally abused from their staff, that is what I meant. If you employ some one to be your maid,it is not the maids job to bow to them but to work in a good manner and earn her money, and the employers job is to treat the worker with dignity and treat them well, from what I have seen and read I would say that 99% of workers want to do their work be paid a decent amount and be treated fairly and as a human being, but that is not the case, only last week an Indonesian girl was killed in malaysia by her employer,a pilipino was girl was found dead in freezer in kuwait, the second commandment is to love thy neighbour as thyself,I am not religious but as a human being I try to treat everyone with respect if they are rich or poor.I am sorry to go on but we must never forget the vast majority of workers just want to earn some money to send home and a little kindness and respect from their employer and in too many cases it does not happen, this is why I will always try and speak up for the underdog as we say, sorry again for talking so long
U are absolutely correct..
Thank u..
Agree….
Agree, only the maid is not wise enough????
Indeed
I do appreciate your concern sir, but this matter is between the right doing and the wrong one. Many pilipino also are working hard with dignity. And it’s not that easy to earn loyalty from the employeer. We need to work hard and take a long time to prove it. This one waste her opportunity to improve her life.
Wow! How can you sleep while doing such thing? Yeah! Easy money no need to work hard, but you face the consequences that will make you regret forever! Think wisely before doing such a stupid thing. But this one" all i can say is what a shame! Nasilaw ka sa kinang ng pera.
We don’t consider that maids stealing from employer are acceptable just because maids were abused by some employers and consider abusive employers are acceptable because of some greedy maids. Mistakes are mistakes everyone should face the consequences of their wrong doing. ????
Speechless…
Thank you…
I do not have a problem if the maid was guilty of stealing, that is the law ,BUT I do have a problem, when maids all over the world are being abused and employers are getting away with it,how many times do we read about terrible abuse, and they either get off or are not even charged, money talks!!!!!
I don’t know why there are people of these kind, you had the opportunity to work abroad and ruined your REPUTATIONS AND DIGNITY just because of greed!!What a SHAME,kung magnanakaw kayo ,jan na lng kayo sa Pilipinas at HUWAG KAYO MANDAMAY ng mga matinong nagtratrabaho sa abroad.NAKAKAHIYA kayo
