An Indonesian domestic worker who was waiting in a vehicle parked in Mong Kok, Kowloon, on Tuesday while her employer was taking two children to a kindergarten was forced out of the car by a thief.

The seven-seater vehicle is registered under a company jointly owned by Love and Faith Cantonese Opera Laboratory director Chan Lai-kwan and Cantonese opera veteran Flora Cheung Po-wah. They purchased it in July 2015 for HK$340,000 (US$43,500), Oriental Daily reported.

At 8am, Chan, 51, parked the vehicle at the loading area of the Mong Kok Complex on Shanghai Street, and he and Cheung then escorted two children to a kindergarten. They left the ignition key in the vehicle, while the domestic helper stayed inside.

A Chinese man, aged around 30 to 35, approached the vehicle and told the maid that the area where it was parked was undergoing maintenance. He asked her to leave the vehicle and let him drive it to another area.

When she refused and told him that she needed to call her boss, the man dragged her out of the vehicle. The maid tried to block the vehicle but failed, and the thief drove it away.

The domestic worker was emotionally distraught and in tears after the incident. Chan assured her that she would not be held responsible for any property loss as the theft was not her fault.

Chan said the most important thing was that the maid was uninjured.

Police categorized the case as “taking a conveyance without authority” and were hunting for a man of Chinese ethnicity, aged around 30-35, with short hair, 165 centimeters tall and wearing a gray T-shirt.

A similar theft occurred last month in Mong Kok. On July 22, a van was seized on Mong Kok Road after the driver got out of the vehicle to make a newspaper delivery, Apple Daily reported.
