A 36-year-old Filipino maid was charged with theft after Macau police arrested her on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing cash and jewelry worth a total of 55,000 Macau patacas (US$6,845) over an eight-month period.

A Macau man reported to the police on Saturday that someone had been stealing cash and jewelry from his apartment since last October, Macau Daily News reported Wednesday.

As there was no evidence of burglary at the apartment, the focus of police inquiries turned to individuals who held keys to the flat.

Officers recovered HK$11,000 (US$1,410) in cash from the domestic worker and some of the lost jewelry, including two rings and a necklace, from a pawn shop.
