태국의 가장 유명한 관광지인 푸켓을 찾는 중국인 관광객이 급감해 푸켓 해변이 한산해지고 호텔에도 빈방이 늘고 있다.

태국 관광업계는 미중 무역분쟁의 여파로 중국 경기가 하강하면서 태국 여행객 감소로 이어졌다는 분석이 나온다.

푸켓은 태국에서 지난해 방콕에 이어 관광객이 가장 많이 찾은 곳으로 태국 관광업계는 푸켓 방문객 수를 업황을 보여주는 지표로 보고 있다.

관광업은 태국 GDP에서 18%를 차지하는 주요 산업이다.

중국인은 태국을 찾는 관광객의 4분의 1 이상을 차지한다. 하지만 태국 정부의 발표에 따르면 지난해 220만 명에 달했던 중국인 관광객이 급격히 줄어들면서 올해 1-9월 중 중국인 관광객은 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 5분의 1 정도에 불과했다.

푸켓 주재 프랑스 명예영사이자 파통비치 인근에 40개의 객실이 있는 숙박 시설을 보유한 클로드 드 크리세이는 현재와 같은 비수기에도 언제나 중국인 관광객이 있었으나 “올해에는 사정이 다르다”고 말했다. 그는 숙박요금을 50%나 인하했다고 밝혔다.

푸켓 뿐 아니라 파타야와 사무이섬 등 태국의 다른 관광지도 마찬가지다. 경기 둔화로 일부 중국인들이 휴가를 떠나는 것을 망설이는 가운데, 환율 영향과 푸켓에서 발생한 유람선 사고의 여파도 영향을 미치고 있다.

올해 들어 태국 바트화는 중국 위안화에 대해 10% 절상됐다. 이런 가운데 푸켓에서 발생한 유람선 사고로 47명의 중국인 관광객이 사망했다.

이처럼 중국인 관광객은 감소하는데 푸켓에서는 호텔 신축이 이어지면서 3000개 이상의 객실이 늘어날 전망이다. 콩삭 쿠풍사콘 태국 호텔협회 부회장 겸 비지트 리조트 이사는 “사업의 관점에서 보면 좋지 않은 현상”이라며 “호텔과 레스토랑, 커피숍이 늘어나고 있다”고 말했다.

하지만 태국 관광당국은 올해 태국을 찾는 관광객이 태국이 목표로 하는 3980만 명에 달할 것이라며 낙관적인 관측을 내놓고 있다.

인도로 눈 돌리는 태국 관광업계

태국 호텔과 여행사들은 중국을 대체할 나라로 다른 나라, 특히 인도를 눈여겨보고 있다. 아직 해외 관광에 본격화하지 않았지만, 대규모 관광객을 유치할 수 있는 잠재력이 큰 나라라는 판단 때문이다.

콩삭 이사는 “인도인 관광객이 업황을 되살려 줄 것으로 기대하고 있다”고 말했다.

인도에서는 중산층이 급격히 증가하면서 인도와 태국을 연결하는 직항편과 무비자 관광객도 늘고 있다. 태국 관광업계에 따르면 올해 1-7월 중 태국을 찾은 인도 관광객이 25% 증가했고 올해 인도 관광객 수는 200만 명을 넘어설 전망이다.

하지만 아직 푸켓의 호텔이나 요식업계에게까지 인도발 훈풍이 불고 있는 건 아니다.

15년 전 태국으로 온 호주인 폴 스코트는 “지금처럼 안 좋은 시기를 본 적이 없다”고 말했다. 그는 태국 바트화 강세를 업황 부진의 주요인으로 지목했으나 관광지로서의 태국의 매력도 약화하고 있다고 덧붙였다. 태국은 이제 사람의 손길이 닿지 않은 파라다이스 같은 관광지가 아니라는 얘기다. 그는 “지금은 (태국이) 새롭지 않고…. 가격이 저렴하지도 않다”고 말했다.
