A 41-year-old Filipina domestic worker had a charge of drug trafficking against her withdrawn at the Kowloon City Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
Michelle Mardo, a mother of three, was freed after nine months of detention after the prosecution withdrew a charge of “trafficking in a dangerous drug” against her for receiving a parcel sent last year from Ecuador by her online boyfriend, sunwebhk.com reported.
The report did not elaborate on the reasons the prosecution withdrew the charge.
Mardo reportedly wanted to file a claim for damages against the Customs and Excise Department for wrongful arrest, according to prison chaplain Fr John Wotherspoon. The priest had put her in contact with a lawyer.
Consul Paulo Saret welcomed the news of the acquittal, but warned Filipinos to be wary of accepting parcels sent to them, especially by people they hardly know.
Saret said he had been telling newly arrived Filipina domestic workers attending post-arrival orientation seminars not to be too trusting with men they meet online or on chance encounters, as they could use them for illicit purposes.
Mardo was arrested in September last year by customs officers, one of whom was disguised as a UPS delivery man, after accepting a parcel containing nearly 300 grams of pure cocaine sent to Mardo’s address in Yuen Long in the New Territories.
