A Filipino woman was one of 17 killed in a bus crash in Dubai on Thursday evening.

A tourist bus carrying 31 passengers crashed into an overhead road sign on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. A total of 17 passengers were killed, while five were critically injured, The Filipino Times reported.

Among the 17 fatalities was a Filipina identified as Marie January Ventura Gallardo, 37, who was traveling from Muscat, Oman. Gallardo was identified by her younger brother early Monday morning after he arrived in Dubai.

A report by Gulf News said Gallardo worked as a physical therapist for one year in Oman. She was traveling to Dubai to visit her sister-in-law when the accident happened.

Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes said the victim’s family in the Philippines had been informed of the accident and his office will repatriate Gallardo’s remains as soon as possible.

“The Philippine government will extend all necessary assistance to the family, particularly in terms of the documentation and the eventual shipment of remains of the deceased back home to the Philippines,” Cortes said.
