Theo số liệu của Bộ Ngoại giao Nhật Bản, đã có 286.900 visa được cấp cho công dân Việt Nam vào năm ngoái, tăng 38% so với năm 2017, báo VN Express đưa tin. Trung Quốc đứng đầu trong danh sách với 5,45 triệu thị thực, chiếm gần 80% tổng số thị thực được cấp cho người nước ngoài hồi năm ngoái.
Philippines ở vị trí thứ hai, Indonesia chiếm vị trí thứ tư. Năm 2018, các cơ quan ngoại giao tại Nhật Bản đã cấp số lượng kỷ lục 6,95 triệu thị thực cho du khách nước ngoài. Số liệu mới nhất cao gấp bốn lần so với con số được ghi nhận năm 2013.
Nhật Bản hiện miễn thị thực cho công dân từ hơn 60 quốc gia, phần lớn là các nước châu Âu. Yêu cầu thị thực cho các quốc gia khác cũng đã được nới lỏng nhằm thúc đẩy du lịch.
