The northern provinces of Vietnam have been hit by a series of floods and landslides caused by seasonal torrential rain and at least three have died.

Mountainous regions including the provinces of Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Lai Chau and Cao Bang recorded between 120mm to 300mm of rainfall day from May 27 to 29, VN Express reported.

A landslide hit Bac Quang district in Ha Giang on May 28. Debris from the landslide buried a family of three and crushed their house. Two survived, but a child died on the way to a hospital.

In a separate case on the same day, a woman in Nguyen Binh, Cao Bang, slipped into a stream and drowned, while 14 houses and 383 acres of crops were flooded by rainwater.

A man in Yen Bai was swept away by flash floods on Tuesday night. His body was retrieved the following day and 300 million dong (US$12,800) worth of damage was done to 47 houses in Yen Bai.

In addition, injuries and damage to roads were reported in other areas. The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control of Vietnam said the northern regions were likely to be struck by flash floods and rises in river levels in the coming days.

The annual monsoon season has started in many countries in Southeast Asia.
