A 33-year-old domestic worker was arrested after she left a five-year-old boy at home alone in Tai Kok Tsui, Kowloon, on Tuesday.
At 11 pm, when the 31-year-old female employer returned home, she discovered her domestic worker was not there and her five-year-old son was alone in the apartment, news website HK01.com reported.
Police were called to the apartment at Imperial Cullinan, a private housing cluster in Tai Kok Tsui, to investigate allegations of neglect of a child. The case, later classified as “child abuse,” was followed up by the crime investigation unit of Mong Kok Police station.
Meanwhile, the boy was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a check-up.
According to the Offences against the Person Ordinance, it is an offense for a person over the age of 16 years who has the custody, charge or care of any child or young person under that age to wilfully assault, ill-treat, neglect, abandon or expose such child or young person to be assaulted, ill-treated, neglected, abandoned or exposed in a manner likely to cause that child or young person unnecessary suffering or injury to health.
Offenders found guilty can face between three and 10 years in jail.
