Chính quyền Việt Nam đã cấm thuốc diệt cỏ có chứa glyphosate sau khi phát hiện ra rằng chất này gây ung thư.
Vào ngày 10 tháng 4, Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển Nông thôn Việt Nam tuyên bố rằng quyết định này sẽ có hiệu lực sau 60 ngày kể từ khi cấp trên ký duyệt, báo VN Expressđưa tin. Thuốc diệt cỏ có chứa Glyphosate sẽ bị cấm sản xuất hoặc nhập khẩu vào Việt Nam.
Ông Hoàng Trung, Cục trưởng Cục Bảo vệ Thực vật, cho biết các sản phẩm có glyphosate còn trên thị trường vẫn có thể được phép sử dụng hoặc bán trong vòng một năm kể từ ngày quy định có hiệu lực. Sau đó, các chất có chứa glyphosate sẽ bị tịch thu và tiêu hủy.
Glyphosate là một trong những thành phần được sử dụng nhiều nhất trong thuốc diệt cỏ. Hơn 100 hiệu thuốc ở Việt Nam có sử dụng chất này và ước tính khoảng 5 triệu lít glyphosate vẫn đang được lưu hành trên thị trường.
Quyết định cấm chất này là được đưa ra sau quyết định của Tòa án Liên bang tại San Francisco ở Mỹ vào tháng trước, phán quyết rằng thuốc diệt cỏ Roundup của tập đoàn Monsanto gây bệnh ung thư. Đây là phán quyết của bồi thẩm đoàn nhất trí.
Một nghiên cứu do Đại học Washington thực hiện vào tháng trước đã phát hiện ra rằng việc tiếp xúc với glyphosate làm tăng nguy cơ ung thư tới 41% cho những người có tiếp xúc. Các nghiên cứu khác cũng phát hiện ra rằng chất này có khả năng gây ung thư phổi, tuyến tiền liệt và máu rất cao.

Quyết định tại Việt Nam sẽ gây áp lực buộc các chính phủ khác ở châu Á phải tuân theo.
Đã có nhiều yêu cầu liên tục cấm glyphosate, cũng như paraquat và chlorpyrifos ở Thái Lan trong những năm gần đây từ các quan chức y tế, Ủy ban Nhân quyền Quốc gia, Văn phòng Ombudsman và các cơ quan truyền thông.
Tuy nhiên, một ủy ban của Bộ Công nghiệp đã đưa ra một quyết định đáng ngạc nhiên hồi tháng 2, cho biết họ sẽ tuân thủ quyết định trước đó của các quan chức Nông nghiệp nhằm hạn chế sử dụng hóa chất, trong khi lệnh cấm hoàn toàn thuốc diệt cỏ và thuốc trừ sâu sẽ được thực hiện trong hai năm tới.
Phó thư ký thường trực của bộ công nghiệp, Apichin Jotikashira, chủ trì cuộc họp Ủy ban Chất độc hại, cho biết họ thừa nhận mối nguy hiểm của việc sử dụng paraquat, glyphosate và chlorpyrifos đối với môi trường và sức khỏe cộng đồng đồng thời cũng đồng ý rằng Thái Lan nên cấm tất cả hoàn toàn, báo The Nation đưa tin.
