Vào khoảng 3 giờ chiều ngày 21 tháng 3, một nhóm 10 học sinh của Trường tiểu học và trung học Hữu Nghị, Hòa Bình đi tắm ở sông Đà, VN Express đưa tin. Các em bị cuốn vô hố nước sâu trên sông .
Chỉ có hai học sinh trong nhóm bơi trở lại bờ được. Thi thể của những đứa trẻ được vớt lên lúc khoảng 4:30 chiều, ba trong số đó là học sinh tiểu học. Người ta thấy các nam sinh lần cuối cùng khi chúng đang chơi bóng đá trước khi nhảy xuống sông tắm.
Một quan chức địa phương cho biết có thể các em học sinh không biết dưới sông có một hố nước sâu. Ở Việt Nam, chết đuối là một trong những nguyên nhân gây tử vong phổ biến ở trẻ em. Theo thống kê của Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới, mỗi năm có hơn 11.000 trẻ em bị chết đuối tại quốc gia này.
