Two drivers died and 16 people were injured when a Citybus double-decker crashed into the back of a lorry which had broken down on a highway in West Kowloon on Monday.
The accident happened at about 10:30 am when the number 967 bus was traveling from Tin Shui Wai in the New Territories to Admiralty on Hong Kong Island when it plowed into a lorry which had broken down in the middle lane near the Elements shopping mall, the Oriental Daily reported.
According to footage from dashboard cameras and posted on social media, it appeared the bus driver did not brake. One set of footage shows a stationary white truck in the second lane of the four-lane highway with its tailgate down. And two objects, one white and one green, were on the road some distance from the truck.
Another bit if footage showed the bus plowing straight into the truck, with both vehicles hurled forward by the impact.
Bus driver So Kwok-wah, 59, who was thrown out of his vehicle, was declared dead at the scene. Truck driver Liem Dam-hung, 54, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later pronounced dead.
Ten women and five men on the bus suffered injuries. Liem’s wife, who was sitting inside the truck when the accident happened, suffered neck pain and was in shock. The Western Harbour Crossing was under fire after the accident as the truck was not towed away for almost an hour before it was rammed by the bus, Apple Daily reported.
