One person was killed and 12 others, including four minors, were injured when an SUV crashed into a mall arcade in Carmona, Cavite, in the Philippines last Wednesday.
The driver of the vehicle, Rosendo Mamucod, fell asleep while waiting for his wife to buy medicine when it suddenly accelerated towards the mall’s main building, Philippine News Agency reported.
Police Major Rommel Carcellar, the chief of Carmona Police, said the 12 injured were rushed to Carmona Hospital and Medical Center while one person, Rollen Sartiel, 22, was pronounced dead on arrival due to severe head injuries. Mamucod, who was found to be still recovering from a stroke, was also rushed to the hospital due to hypertension.
Carcellar said police were coordinating with the mall’s management to retrieve security footage for an investigation. He said the footage would determine if the vehicle did suddenly accelerate.
According to Police Staff Sergeant Marlon Ramirez, the officer in charge of the case, Mamucod’s vehicle was parked at a slot for those with disabilities at Waltermart Carmona before it crashed into the mall.
Police said an investigation was ongoing and they were preparing charges against the driver.
