A 50-year-old Indonesian construction worker from the Malaysian state of Johor was charged at a sessions court in Ipoh, Perak state, with causing the death of a compatriot 18 years ago, and was denied bail while awaiting his next hearing in April.

Niwar Ali, who was not arrested until late last month, gave no plea after the charge of culpable homicide was read out by Judge Azman Abu Hassan on Monday, the China Press reported.

The defendant was charged with culpable homicide but not amounting to murder of the victim Rebin Sumadi Suwoko, which was allegedly committed near Perak Tengah district police headquarters early on April 14, 2001.

If he is convicted of the offense, he will face a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and may also be liable to a fine.

No bail was offered and the court has scheduled April 14 for the next hearing.
