A Filipino man was arrested on Tuesday after being suspected of raping and attempted to kill a nine-year-old girl who was found tied up and bruised under a bridge in Cainta, Rizal, in the Philippines.
Police arrested Pepito Tagal, an ex-convict who served 13 years in prison for robbery, in Barangay San Roque in Cubao, Quezon City, after his wife gave them information about his whereabouts, GMA News reported.
Tagal was accused of raping and abusing a Filipino girl who was found tied and bruised under the Ortigas Extension bridge. The girl was found by a local resident who called for help and rushed her to a hospital.
The doctor said the girl had ligature marks, which indicated that her neck had been tied with a rope, as well as scars and bruises all over her body. The girl also bore signs of having been raped, Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
Police said Tagal was a drug user and community volunteers found drug paraphernalia such as lighters and foil in the area under the bridge where the girl was found. The volunteers said the area was believed to be a hangout for drug users.
The girl confirmed on video that she had been strangled and raped. She said she did not know the name of her attacker, but could recognize his face.
Tagal denied abusing the child, saying he was friends with the child’s parents. He was in the custody of the Queson City Police District and will be turned over to Cainta Police.
