The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs has announced that a Filipino student recently drowned in Australia.
In a statement, the DFA said the 24-year-old student, who was studying at Queensford College in Brisbane, drowned off Flinders Beach in North Stradbroke Island on Monday. The DFA did not disclose the student’s identity and revealed no further information on the incident.
“In her report to the Home Office, Ambassador to Australia Ma. Helen B. De La Vega said authorities in Queensland informed the Philippine Embassy in Canberra of the death of the 24-year-old student from Queensford College in Brisbane,” the DFA said.
The student’s death marks the fifth incident of Filipinos drowning overseas since the start of the year.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs extends its deepest sympathy to the family of a Filipino student who drowned in Australia,” the DFA said.
The Office of Migrant Workers Affairs is in touch with the victim’s family who have requested the DFA’s assistance in the repatriation of his remains.
Earlier this year, two Filipino students in New Zealand drowned in two separate incidents. The students were reportedly on a swimming trip with their friends when they suddenly encountered trouble. A newlywed Filipino couple on their honeymoon also drowned while they were out snorkeling in the Maldives.
