A foreign man, said to be drunk, fell to his death from a building in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island on Tuesday morning.
Police received a report at 4am that a man was seen sitting on the edge of a commercial building at 239 Hennessy Road in Wan Chai, news website HK01.com reported.
Before police officers arrived at the scene, the man reportedly jumped from the building and was seen unconscious on the road. Paramedics said later the man died at the scene.
It was understood that the man, who worked at a Spanish restaurant in the building, had a drink after work with his girlfriend and other friends in the area. The couple reportedly had a quarrel.
The man returned to the Spanish restaurant. Just prior to his fall, he told a security guard he had killed his girlfriend and planned to jump from the building, Apple Daily reported.
Police feared for the safety of his girlfriend, which led to them checking every unit in the building to try to find the woman.
Three hours later, officers were able to locate the man’s girlfriend. She had not suffered any physical injury but was very emotional after learning that her boyfriend had died. Paramedics sent her to hospital for treatment.
After an initial investigation, police believed the man fell to his death from the building but said they would look into the reasons for the incident further.
Local media reports did not mention the nationality of the deceased man.
