A 33-year-old Filipina domestic worker was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly shaking a 10-month-old baby in her care in the New Territories. A Hong Kong woman called police after checking surveillance camera footages and finding the domestic worker had shaken her son forcefully, news website HK01.com reported.
Police arrived at the apartment in private housing estate Bellagio in Shen Tseng and after checking the video, officers took the maid to the police station and detained her for alleged ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person.
The baby boy did not show any obvious injuries, however, he was sent to Yan Chai Hospital for a full medical examination. Shaking a baby forcefully and violently, even for as little as five seconds, can cause brain damage. It is a form of child abuse.
It was understood that the employer and the domestic worker had a quarrel recently, the Oriental Daily reported. The crime investigation unit from Tsuen Wan police district was following up the case.
