ألقت السلطات الإماراتية القبض على مشجع كرة بريطاني بعد ارتدائه تي-شيرت منتخب قطر في مباراة بينه وبين منتخب العراق في بطولة كأس آسيا لكرة القدم التي أقيمت في الإمارات الشهر الماضي.
قال أحد أصدقاء المشجع البريطاني علي عيسى أحمد لجريدة الجارديان البريطانية أن المشجع تعرض للقبض والاعتداء من قبل الشرطة بعد حضوره المباراة قبل أن يلقى سراحه.
توجه أحمد بعد الإفراج عنه لقسم شرطة للإبلاغ عن الواقعة، فتم القبض عليه مجدداً بتهمة الادعاء الكاذب ضد مسؤولي الأمن الإماراتيين، بحسب صديقه عامر لوكي الذي اتصل به أحمد عندما سمحت له السلطات بمكالمة تليفونية في 31 يناير/كانون الثاني.
كانت الإمارات ضمن عدة بلدان عربية قطعت علاقاتها الدبلوماسية مع قطر في يونيو/حزيران 2017 بعد اتهامها بالتدخل في شؤون الدول المجاورة ودعم الجماعات الإرهابية. أصدرت الإمارات قرار في هذا الوقت بتجريم «إبداء التعاطف» مع قطر بعقوبة السجن من ثلاثة إلى 15 سنة والغرامة التي لاتقل عن 500 الف درهم (136 ألف دولار)
