Six suspected illegal migrant workers who were caught in a minivan heading to Hualien from Yilan were arrested by Taiwan police on Thursday.
Acting upon a citizen’s report, on January 24, officers from Hualien County Police Bureau and Yilan County Police Bureau jointly set up a checkpoint at Heping River, which separates the two counties, The Taiwan Apple Daily reported.
At 11:30pm, a van travelling along Suhua Highway from Yilan was pulled over at the checkpoint. Six men aboard the van allegedly tried to run away, however all were subdued by police officers.
None of the suspects had valid work permits as they had run away from their previous employers. One of them was found to have overstayed and worked illegally in Taiwan for more than five years.
All six were referred to the National Immigration Agency for further action.
