A 36-year-old Filipina domestic worker was sentenced to one week in prison after she pleaded guilty to theft at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
Defendant Melody C.F., a mother of two who has been working in Hong Kong since 2008, admitted that she had stolen HK$100 (US$12.75) from her employer in North Point, Hong Kong Island, hongkongnews.com.hk reported.
The court heard that since the defendant had worked for the employer from September last year, the employer had noticed that money was going missing at home.
The employer then wrote down the serial numbers of her HK$100 bills before putting the money inside a bag which she left on top of a shoe cabinet on September 19.
When the employer returned home that night and found that a $100 bill was missing, she called the police.
Investigators later found the missing note in the domestic worker’s wallet and she admitted to the crime.
The defense lawyer asked for leniency, noting that the defendant had immediately admitted to the crime after she was caught. The defendant reportedly took the money to help her 18-year-old daughter with her university tuition fees.
Principal Magistrate Peter Law said the defendant stole from the employer which was a breach of trust. He sentenced her to one week in prison.
