The 33-year-old Malaysian father of a five-year-old boy and an Indonesian woman, 23, understood to be the boy’s stepmother have been arrested in the Malaysian state of Johor in connection with the child’s death from suspected abuse.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, the pair took the child, who was reportedly unconscious, to Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency ward after initial resuscitation, the Sin Chew Daily (Malaysia) reported.

By 12:50am, a specialist at the hospital filed a case of suspected child abuse to police after finding bruises over the victim’s body, face, chest and back.

The post mortem revealed that the boy had died from blunt force trauma to his abdomen.

On Thursday morning, South Johor Bahru police arrested the couple at their home in Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru.

The man, who was the victim’s biological father, is a cook by employment, while the Indonesian woman is an unemployed illegal immigrant who police say failed to produce any identification documents.

Both were remanded in custody to assist the investigation of suspected murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
