Three police officers in the Philippines were found guilty of murdering the son of a Filipino migrant worker on Thursday, who they alleged was a drug dealer.
In August 2017, the officers dragged 17-year-old Kian Delos Santos into a dark alley near his house in Caloocan City, where they shot him. Police claimed Delos Santos fired at them while resisting arrest, ABS-CBN News reported.
Several witnesses said the officers handed Delos Santos a gun and told him to run before firing shots at him. Delos Santos was shot in the head while he was on the ground kneeling and turning away from the police.
Delos Santos’ family denied allegations he was a drug dealer.
On Thursday at the Caloocan Regional Trial Court, Arnel Oares, Jerwin Cruz and Jeremias Pereda were found guilty of killing Delos Santos and sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in prison, or “reclusion perpetua,” which means life imprisonment.
