A 42-year-old Hong Kong man and his mother, aged 68, were arrested by police on Monday for allegedly growing cannabis plants in a public housing apartment in Ma On Shan, the New Territories.

Acting on a tip-off, officers from the special duty unit of Shatin Police Station raided the apartment in Hang On Estate and found ten suspected cannabis plants inside the flat, news website HK01.com reported.

The man surnamed Chan, said to be a hairdresser, and his mother surnamed Kok were arrested.

Besides the plants, officers seized equipment for growing the plants, including a tent, fertilizer, grow lights and a ventilation system.

Police also confiscated two packets of suspected illegal drugs with an estimated street value of HK$9,000 (US$1,148).

After an initial investigation, police suspect that the illegal drugs were for the man’s own use and believed that he studied how to grow cannabis plants online.
